Voter Registration

Voter Registration applications for new registrations must be received by the Board of Voter Registration and Elections Office or postmarked no later than 30 days prior to election.

17 year old’s who will be 18 years of age as of the date of the next General Election may register to vote prior to 18th birthday and may also participate in primary elections prior to 18th birthday.

You will receive a voter registration certificate confirming that your voter registration application has been approved and processed.

Listed below are locations where Anderson County residents can register to vote. Registrants must be a U.S. citizen, a resident of South Carolina and be at least 18 years old by the next general election. Based on state and federal law, each eligible applicant is registered within the proper precinct and various single-member districts.

Citizens may also register by mail. Applications are available at Anderson County Library branches, city halls, and various high schools. An online application is available through SCVotes.org.

State and federal laws, including the Motor Voter Act, dictate that the S.C. Department of Public Safety’s Division of Motor Vehicles must offer voter registration to all citizens. Other agencies also mandated to offer voter registration include military recruitment stations and various other federal and state offices. However, you must also be a client at the location where you want to register. “Motor Voter” registration sites are listed by geographic area: Anderson, and Belton

Military and Overseas Citizens (UOCAVA) Voters

Federal law requires states to provide military and overseas citizens with special procedures to help facilitate voter registration and absentee voting by these citizens. The Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA) covers:

  • members of the United States Uniformed Services and merchant marine;
  • their family members; and
  • United States citizens residing outside the United States.

Absentee Voting

  • Absentee precinct is located at 903 W. Greenwood St., Suite 2500, Abbeville, SC 29620.
  • Voter or immediate family member may call (864) 366-2400, ext. 53 or submit written request for absentee ballot application to klondon@abbevillecountysc.com.
  • Request form for absentee application may be faxed (864) 366-5797 or mailed to 903 W. Greenwood St., Suite 2500, Abbeville, SC 29620.
  • Authorized Representative may request absentee application on behalf of physically disabled voter by visiting the Board of Voter Registration and Elections Office or may submit request in writing.
  • Absentee ballots are mailed approximately 45 days prior to each election. Friday before each election is the last day ballots can be mailed.
  • In person absentee voting is available up to 5 pm on the Monday prior to each election.
  • All voted ballots must be received by the Abbeville County Voter Registration & Elections Board no later than 7 pm on election day to be counted.
