Animal Services Director

This position directs all activities of the Abbeville County Animal Shelter.

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1.   Operations Management – This position oversees the intake and disposition of all animals brought to the shelter, either through citizens or through animal control.  The incumbent must understand and ensure compliance with all laws governing the safe handling of such animals, and process and protocol for the intake process.  This includes a qualified veterinarian assessment, appropriate inoculations, bathing, any other needs, and kenneling.  The shelter may take in a variety of animals, so the Director must anticipate and have available the appropriate staffing and facilities to accommodate.  When an animal is deemed unadoptable for either threatening behavior or untreatable illness, the director will work with the veterinarian for the best solution, including euthanasia.  The Director is responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with adoptions agencies inside and outside of the State to maximize opportunities for placement of all available animals.  The shelter is a 24/7 operation.

2.   Staff Management – The Director oversees the daily activities of the staff, including custodians, technicians, and veterinarians.  In addition, volunteer staff may volunteer at the discretion of the Director daily.  The Director has the ultimate authority to hire and perform the necessary performance evaluations with approval from the County Director.

3.   Financial Management – The Director prepares the annual budget for Administration and the County Council, and manages the expenditures under the plan monthly.

4.   Marketing – The Director shall maintain a community presence, using social media and other means available to promote the mission of the shelter, and maximize adoptions potential.  As part of this responsibility, the Director may participate in local organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce and Humane Society to increase community awareness and build positive relationships.

This position operates with high level of authority.  The major challenge is working with the volunteer organization and the community is a positive manner, and keeping a balance between the public perception and the realities of running animal services.

REQUIRED EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND JOB-RELATED EXPERIENCE:
