Firefighter Specialist Mechanic

Summary:

The purpose of this position is to perform preventive maintenance of county owned and firefighting vehicles as required.

This class works independently, under limited supervision, reporting weekly updates of completed work. This position reports to the Abbeville County Fire Coordinator.

Essential Duties

  • The primary duty of this position will be to maintain County apparatus and assets, and ensure a state of readiness.
  • Repairs and maintains systems and components such as diesel and gasoline engines, air conditioning, braking systems, electrical systems, suspension, transmission, and front-end work on emergency vehicles.
  • Services, troubleshoots, and performs routine automotive repairs on engines and related components of electrical, mechanical, and computerized vehicle systems.
  • Diagnoses and repairs malfunctions of vehicle computer components.
  • Performs preventive maintenance and perform test drives.
  • Performs Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) maintenance as required by the respiratory protection program in NFPA 1500.
  • Responds to emergency incidents such as medical emergencies, car accidents, technical rescues, structure fires, vehicle fires, fire alarms as needed to supplement personnel responses and provide scene support.
  • Participates in physical training to prepare for the challenges of emergency mitigations.
  • Maintains and earns continuous education on firefighting emergencies, medical emergencies, and technical rescue.
  • Assists driver/ operator with apparatus checks and maintenance this is done to ensure operational readiness.
  • Responsible for performing driver endorsement skill test.
  • Performs minor building maintenance projects.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Four (4) years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • MSA SCBA Technician.
  • South Carolina Fire Academy Instructor.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state Class E driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Physical Demands

  • Performs medium work that involves walking, standing, stooping, jumping, lifting, digging, pushing and raising objects and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis and 50 to 100 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
    • Electrical shock; Heights.
    • Radiation; Disease/pathogens.
    • Toxic/caustic chemicals; Explosives; Violence.
    • Other extreme hazards not listed above.
