Summary:

The purpose of this position is to assists in managing convenience centers and at the landfill in accordance with SCDHEC regulations.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Essential Duties

  • Support daily recycling and waste‑diversion operations at the landfill.
  • Monitor recycling areas, equipment, and containers to ensure proper use and cleanliness.
  • Assist with sorting, contamination checks, and material handling.
  • Help track recycling volumes and maintain basic operational records.
  • Provide guidance to residents and staff on proper recycling procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining compliance documentation for the Solid Waste Department.
  • Willing to learn new skills and take on tasks that require basic computer knowledge.
  • Support special projects, clean‑up events, and landfill improvement efforts.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

  • High School graduate or GED equivalent.
  • Some related solid waste or recycling experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Special Certifications and Licenses:

  • SCDHEC Landfill Operators Certification.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Physical Demands

  • Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all of the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.

Unavoidable Hazards (Work Environment)

  • Involves routine and frequent exposure to:
    • Bright/dim light; Dusts and pollen.
    • Extreme heat and/or cold; Wet or humid conditions.
    • Extreme noise levels, Animals/wildlife.
    • Vibration; Fumes and/or noxious odors.
    • Traffic; Moving machinery.
