Part Time Library Assistant I

The purpose of this position is to register patron, explains library policy and procedures, charges library materials and discharges returned materials. Duties include inputting and verification of data and a variety of complex clerical functions related to the circulation and preparation of library materials.

This class works under close to general supervision according to set procedures but determines how or when to complete tasks.

Essential Duties

  • Registers library patrons by data entry of information into computerized integrated on-line circulation system.
  • Explains routine circulation, overdue fines and fees, use of materials within the Library, and related policies and procedures to the public in person and over the telephone.
  • Charges and discharges library materials via a computerized circulation system; sorts damaged material, separates books and other items that have been placed on hold, belong to other library branches, or books with incomplete bibliographic information, or materials on which a fine or fee has been placed.
  • Receives payment, performs routine cash handling using cash register and inputs payment information into computerized system.
  • Enters data into a computer terminal from a variety of source documents according to well-defined procedures.
  • Processes material according to well-defined procedures.
  • Prepares and distributes library materials for circulation.
  • Shelves materials, retrieve them, and arrange and maintain them for accessibility.
  • Performs related work as assigned.

Minimum Education and Experience Qualifications

  • High School graduation or GED equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of experience in a library or in general clerical work; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • None

Physical Demands

  • Performs sedentary work that involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time: requires little or no dexterity. Requires occasional lifting of boxes and bins less than 50 lbs.
